Owls Earn 5-2 Win Over FGCU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's tennis (3-4) hosted a home match for the first time in 2022 and the only time in the squad's first 10 matches of the season. The hostesses were not very hospitable, dishing out a 5-2 loss to Florida Gulf Coast University (3-3) on Friday afternoon.

The Owls secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Court one was tied at four but did not play out the match since the point was already secured.

Singles play began with Lexi Silna taking her match in straight sets. Holding a 2-0 lead, the Owls fell on court five, but Greta Schieroni secured FAU's third point, in the best of seven match, setting up the opportunity for either Katerina Filip or Carina Soomer to clinch the match for the Owls.

Filip was the first to do so closing out her match at 6-4, 6-4 to give the Owls the home-court win. This turned all eyes to court six where Sommer orchestrated a came back win, after dropping the first set, to record her second-consecutive win in as many matches.

"It was a good day for the Owls," said Alvarez. "Home openers are never easy, but each player did a great job individually and as a team. It was great to see the girls fighting for every point and getting the team win."
