FAU Drops a Pair in The Spring Games
2/18/2022 8:00:00 PM | Softball
LEESBURG, Fla. – The FAU softball team began The Spring Games with a pair of losses on Friday. The Owls fell in a tight 2-1 ballgame to North Carolina in game one before dropping the second game of the afternoon to Liberty, 13-0.
Â
Game 1, UNC 2, FAU 1
Â
The first ballgame of the weekend was a tight pitcher's duel between FAU starter Lynn Gardner and Hannah George of UNC. Gardner did not allow a run until the top of the fourth inning, when Sara Jubas came around to score on an error.
Â
Sara Berthiaume jump-started the FAU offense with a triple to right center field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Prior to the sixth, FAU only had one hit, which was a leadoff single from Berthiaume.
Â
Next up was Kaitlyn Cunningham, and the Owls tried to lay down a suicide squeeze, but the bunt attempt from Cunningham missed. Berthiaume somehow stayed alive in a rundown between third and home, and the Owls' left fielder slid into third safely. Cunningham delivered a clutch single up the middle a few pitches later to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
The Tar Heels pushed a runner to third after a leadoff double in the first at bat, but then Gardner got the next two outs via groundout. The Heels nabbed the lead by scoring on a passed ball, and FAU was unable to find the equalizer in the bottom frame.
Â
Game 2, Liberty 13, FAU 0 (5 Innings)
Â
The Flames jumped on the Owls quickly, putting up six runs in the top of the second and six more in the top of the third. Gabby Sacco took the loss in the circle for FAU but did not allow an earned run with six unearned runs.
