Owls set for road test at Miami Wednesday

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team (1-0) continues its season-opening road trip on Wednesday as the Owls head to Coral Gables to face off against the Miami Hurricanes (3-0). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET inside the Watsco Center and on ACC Network Extra.
Head coach Jennifer Sullivan enters her second year leading the Owls in 2022-23. Coach Sullivan sits at 6-25 overall through her two seasons in Boca Raton. The Owls are fresh off their season-opening 79-62 win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, which marked the third-consecutive season the Owls won their season-opener.
Through their first game, the Owls have been led by Joiya Maddox and Dyllan Hanna who scored a team-best 13 points against the Wildcats, while Devyn Scott and Aniya Hubbard delivered 12-point performances in the season-opener, followed by Janeta Rozentale who also rounded out the Owls' double-digit performances with 11 points. Rozentale notched FAU's first double-double of the season, leading the team in rebounds with 10 in the contest, while also dishing out a team-best six assists. Hanna recorded a team-leading three blocks against the Wildcats. Sofia Galeron led the team in shooting, registering 75 percent of her shots from the floor and 66.7 percent of her shots from 3-point range.
In 2022-23, the Owls return seven from the 2021-22 team and add seven newcomers, including three NCAA DI transfers from Fairleigh Dickinson, Kansas State, and Rutgers, in Devin Scott, Jada Moore, and Joiya Maddox, as well as four true freshmen in Aniya Hubbard, Ajalon Gillard, Dyllan Hanna, and Carlie Vick. FAU returns a ton of the team's production from a year ago, bringing back 97 percent of the team's blocks, 67 percent of the team's scoring, 65 percent of the team's rebounds and steals, and 63 percent of the team's minutes from the 2021-22 campaign.
Miami is 3-0 to open the 2022-23 season and is just coming off an 81-46 win over Boston University on Sunday. Last season, the Hurricanes finished 21-13 and advanced to the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament before eventually falling to the eventual national champions, South Carolina, 49-33. The Hurricanes are in their 18th season under head coach Katie Meier, who has amassed a 327-211 record during her time in Miami, and a 403-256 overall record over her 22 years of coaching at Miami and Charlotte.
Through their first three games of the season, the Hurricanes have been led by Destiny Harden, who as averaged a team-best 13 points per game, as well as Latasha Lattimore, Haley Cavinder, and Ja'Leah Williams, who have collected 12.7, 12, and 11.3 points per game each, respectively. Lattimore has averaged a team leading 65 percent shooting from the field, while Williams leads Miami from beyond the arc, shooting 60 percent so far in 2022-23. Harden and Lazaria Spearman are tied for the team-lead in rebounds, averaging 6.7 boards per contest. Hanna Cavinder has dished out a team-best 11 assists this season, while Harden, Lattimore, and Jasmyne Roberts have recorded a team-leading two blocks each this season.
Miami leads the all-time series between the Hurricanes and the Owls, 19-0. In Miami, the Hurricanes hold a 15-0 all-time record. In the last meeting between the two programs, Miami won 56-46 on Nov. 18, 2021, in Coral Gables last season.
Next, FAU returns home on Monday, Nov. 21 as the Owls host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish for their home-opener for a scheduled 7 p.m. tip inside FAU Arena.
