Owls Win Twice on Day 1 of Paradise Classic
9/3/2021 9:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (4-1) earned a pair of victories in their first two matches of the Paradise Classic on Friday on the strength of outstanding play by graduate transfer Christine Jarman and the continued brilliance of current Conference USA Freshman of the Week, Klara Zarnovicka.
Match One vs. Stetson (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23)
The first match of the day brought FAU a chance to avenge their loss to the Hatters back in January. The retooled roster rode great performances from Jarman and Katelynn Robine, who finished with 18 and 14 kills, respectively, while Zarnovicka led the way once again, equalling her personal best with 22 kills and setting a new career-high mark in digs, with 14.
After the Hatters took the tightly contested second set. FAU responded by taking set number three in convincing fashion, with Lauryn Green providing the spark from her middle blocker position to fight through a tough Hatter frontcourt.
In the fourth set, the Owls defense came alive to keep the Hatters from gaining momentum, with neither team able to gain a lead of more than two. In the end, it was the constant pressure applied by Jarman that won the battle at net and the match for the Owls.
Match Two vs. Bethune-Cookman (25-23, 25-14, 25-20)
The nightcap between the Owls and Wildcats continued the tradition of annual matchups between the two squads, with FAU able to maintain firm control in a virtual wire-to-wire victory.
Zarnovicka led in kills with 11 but it was a much more evenly distributed stat line as Alicia Hearn added a season high nine kills on 13 attacks and Halle Olson put away a season-high 6 kills.
FAU led nearly the entire way in each set, finding holes in the Cookman backline for deep strikes by Green and Halle Olson, who fired away for six kills of her own.
