BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (5-1) won their match against the Stetson Hatters, 3-0, on Saturday, and in doing so claimed victory in the Paradise Classic. The Owls went a perfect 3-0 across the two-day event.
FAU graduate transfer Christine Jarman was named tournament MVP after terrific showings in all three matches. Jarman has proved to be exactly as advertised and more following her arrival from the University of Virginia. The Boynton Beach, Florida product has provided the exactly kind of veteran presence and complete performances the Owls needed.
Jarman was also named to the all-tournament team alongside Owls sophomore setter Stephanie Young and junior middle blocker Lauryn Green.
The Owls entered the day with plenty of momentum after winning their previous three matchups and continued their run of great play against the Hatters.
Lauryn Green put together another fine performance to lead the Owls attack with 10 kills while frontcourt mate
Alicia Hearn set a season-high mark with eight. Hearn combined with
Aniya Harvey for 11 total blocks, forming a wall at the net to keep the Hatter attacks at bay.
The Owls jumped out to an early lead in the first period and led set one wire-to-wire behind
Klara Zarnovicka's four kills.
After a strong response by the Hatters in set two, communication was the name of the game on the FAU side of the court, as the Owls seemed comfortable and never out-of-sorts even when they trailed midway though the set. Young's smooth play and calm demeanor helped keep the team on an even keel, and her timely sets provided plenty of firepower for the front line. Set three saw the Owls come flying out the gate to take an 11-3 lead, one they would not relinquish as they won the final set comfortably 25-17.
"We had a fantastic weekend, this is a special group of girls that are a lot of fun to coach," says head volleyball coach
Fernanda Nelson. "They are dedicated to and committed to each other. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we are excited to get better every day!"
- Robine extended her 8+ kill streak to six matches
