BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's golf is pleased to announce its fall slate under first-year head coach
Mark Leon, with the opener set for a week from Friday.
The squad will tee off first in Albuquerque, New Mexico, beginning Sept. 24, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. Two Mondays after that, starting Oct. 4, is the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, and the fall concludes with a trip east to the Bahamas, Paradise Islands to be exact, to take part in the White Sands Bahamas Little Rock Invitational (Oct. 29-31).
"Our fall season will include events in New Mexico, Texas and the Bahamas," said Leon. "I'm looking forward to having the boys compete for spots in our lineup and hopefully having a number of guys step up to earn spots and represent FAU on the road. The fall is very important, but it's a long year and our focus needs to be on continued improvement and growing this program; the fact that we have incredible weather year-round, and opportunities for our guys to compete locally against professionals on off weeks, gives us a massive advantage throughout the winter to continue our improvement. We will keep doing everything we can to get better, look for opportunities to maximize our strengths, and try to have a lot of fun in the process."
Here is more that Coach Leon has to say about the 2021-22 Owls:
"If I'm being completely honest, I'm a new head coach and I've been somewhat nervous about ensuring things are done the right way. I've spent a decade coaching some great teams and some struggling teams, so I have an idea of how I want things to look if we are going to be successful.
"Fortunately, I've inherited a really special team with a lot the same characteristics of the best teams I've coached. I've been so encouraged with the work ethic these guys have shown, and their willingness to help each other and adapt as we try to navigate a series of firsts. Ryan Jamison put together a great group of young men, and there is certainly a lot of talent on this roster, and potential for a special year.
"In 2021, we have only two perennial starters returning in Max (Sturdza) and Alex (Maguire). That means there are going to be seven guys with a totally clean slate trying to make an impact for the Owls. My goal for this fall is to learn as much as I can about this group and what enables them to play their best, while communicating a set of standards related to how we need to prepare and conduct ourselves in order to get the most out of our program."
