BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (1-1) won and lost a match on day one of the FAU Invite. The Owls defeated Stony Brook 3-2 in a five set marathon before being outlasted by the North Florida Ospreys in match two, 3-1.
Â
Match One: FAU vs. Stony Brook
The Owls went up two sets to none on the back of a breakout performance from Freshman outside hitter
Klara Zarnovicka. The Czech national burst onto the scene with a game-high 22 kills on a .348 hitting percentage and she would continue to pour in attacks for the duration of the match.Â
Sets from teammate
Stephanie Young were on time and well-located as she and Miabella English combined for 47 assists. A late rally near the end of set two knotted the teams at 24, and though FAU would win the set 27-25, Stony Brook seemed to find their footing and responded in kind by winning sets three and four..
However, the final set proved to be too much FAU. Graduate transfer outside hitter
Christine Jarman provided plenty of her own firepower in the frontcourt and connected for 2 of 12 the team's kills in set five as the Owls closed out the set 15-4, finishing the match on 6-0 run.
Match Two: FAU vs. North Florida
UNF jumped out to an early lead in the first set and would not relinquish it, putting the Owls in a 1-0 hole to start set two. FAU responded with a strong set by three of their front court hitters, Zarnovicka, Jarman and Katelyn Robine, who finished with 10 kills. The Owls rode their big swings to take set two, 25-20.
The doors that had been open for big hitters Zarnovicka and Jarman previously were quickly closed. Even a few ferocious strikes still found homes in the arms of waiting defenders.
Though the results will not show it, FAU has already shown to have veteran leadership from Jarman and and a star in the making in Zarnovicka.
Â
Match 1
- Freshman Zarnovicka broke out and made an immediate impact in her first game as an Owl, finishing with 22 kills out of 46 attacks.
Match 2
- Zarnovicka again led the way with 18 kills
- Jarman added 10 kills, 7 digs and 2 blocks
Day 2 Pass
