BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (2-1) won their final match of the FAU Invite over the Wofford by a score of 3-1. In doing so, the Owls became the runner-up of the tournament. FAU took down the Terriers behind a career-best showing on defense from junior Camryn Vogler and a tenacious front line attack featuring freshman Katelyn Robine.
Â
The Owls came flying out the gate to grab the lead early in the first set, 7-1, after scoring the first five points. Sophomore setter Miabella English connected with her front court teammates early and often as she tallied eight of her 26 assists in the first set alone. Wofford trailed for most of the set before mounting a late rally to tie it at 20-20. The teams traded blows all the way to deuce before Aniya Harvey's kill closed out the first set.Â
In the second set, it was Wofford's turn to jump out to an early lead, one which the Terriers held through most of the period. FAU fought back to tie it at 17 before taking the lead for the first time in set two. Robine seemed to feed off the energy of the crowd and smashed five of her 19 total kills. This set was also knotted at 20 as the teams went back and forth, but the Terriers were able to get a few key blocks at the net to stuff multiple Owl frontline attacks to take the set 25-23.Â
Set three was all Owls, despite a Wofford rally midway though. At 10-9 with FAU ahead, Wofford was threatening to take the lead FAU had enjoyed for the early part of the period. However, five straight FAU points, including three service aces by Zarnovicka, put the Owls in front for good, and they cruised from there to go up 2 sets to 1.
The fourth and final set was controlled by Wofford and they looked to be prime position to even the match at two sets apiece as they led 18-13. FAU had different plans as the team rallied behind service from Christine Jarman and terrific front line play from Lauryn Green who added a kill and two block assists to draw level at 18. That proved to be the turning point as the Terriers could not recover and the Owls hit the gas to take the set 25-20.
Â
"It was a great weekend," said head coach Fernanda Nelson. "We definitely got better throughout the tournament. Today was a great team win. I loved how we bounced back from last night and we are so proud of our girls. We have a lot of work to do and we are excited to keep getting better."
Â
The Owls will host the Paradise Classic tournament as they welcome Bethune-Cookman, CSU Bakersfield and Stetson to Boca Raton. FAU will play their first match against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, September 3rd, with first serve scheduled for noon.Â
