BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (6-4-2, 3-4-0 in Conference USA) defeated UAB (3-12-1, 1-5-1 C-USA) in a 2-1 comeback victory on Saturday. With the win, the Owls completed their first winning regular season since 2007, while ending the season with the school records in least amount of goals allowed (11) and goals against average (0.92) in a season.
Â
The Owls fell into a deficit early, but that didn't stop them from overtaking the match later on. At the eighth minute, an Owl fouled a UAB player in the penalty box, which set up for a penalty kick try. UAB's Aodhán O'Hara capitalized on the PK try and the Owls trailed, 1-0. FAU got some offensive movement rolling, outshooting the Blazers 6-1 at the 23rd minute mark. At the 26th minute, Adrian Levy took a shot, which hit the crossbar and off the miss, Ivan Mykhailenko got a piece of the ball to head it into the back of the net. FAU tied the game, 1-1.
Â
At the 37th minute, another foul occurred in the box, this time penalizing UAB. Mykhailenko's day was not done yet, as he drained the penalty kick try for his second goal of the match in what would be the game-winner. FAU headed to the locker room with a 2-1 edge, while outshooting the Blazers, 10-1.
Â
In the second half, UAB's Grayson Dupont was issued his second yellow card of the match, which disqualified him from the game. The Blazers were forced to play a man down the rest of the way. The Owls' backline held it down to limit UAB to just one shot in the second half, taken at the 71st minute, which was saved by Neil Strauber. FAU came up with a few good looks for some insurance, but the team was able to hang tough to pull out the 2-1 win.
