BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (3-2-1, 0-2-0 in Conference USA) dropped its home C-USA opener against No. 10 Kentucky (9-2-1, 1-1-0 C-USA) Saturday afternoon, 3-1. Ivan Mykhailenko delivered the equalizer to knot the game up at one in the first half, but two UK goals in the second frame lifted the Wildcats ahead for good. FAU will look for its first league win on the road at Old Dominion next Sunday.
UK tallied the first two shots of the game, including one that found the back of the net at the 16th minute. The Owls delivered the equalizer just eight minutes later after the Wildcats fouled FAU in the box. Ivan Mykhailenko took the penalty kick, which slipped right by the UK keeper for the Kyiv, Ukraine native's second goal of the season. At the end of the first half, shots were even between the two teams at three.
In the second half, the Wildcats capitalized at the 71st and 75th minute to take a comfortable lead against the Owls with 15 minutes remaining in the contest. FAU fought hard to keep the game going by getting off five shots in the final seven minutes of play. The Owls came up short from finding the back of the net, with two shots at the 88th minute finishing just wide of the net. FAU fell in its second straight conference game, 3-1.
The Owls will hit the road to Norfolk, Virginia to take on Old Dominion next Sunday, March 21 at 11 a.m.
