BOCA RATON -- The FAU men's basketball team is back in action for the first time in three weeks Friday and Saturday. The Owls will look to get above .500 in Conference USA action once again this weekend, with a two-game series at UTSA.
The Owls are 8-7 overall and 3-3 in C-USA action, while the Roadrunners are 10-9 overall and 6-6 in league play.
The Owls have not played since Jan. 23. FAU's series at Marshall was postponed due to Covid-19 testing and contact tracing in the Owls' program, while last weekend's Western Kentucky series was postponed with Covid-19 issues in the Hilltopper program.
FAU leads the all-time series with UTSA by a 7-4 tally. The Owls won two home games over the Roadrunners last season. FAU's last win in San Antonio was in 2018.
FAU head coach
Dusty May has been the Owls' head man for two-plus seasons and has faced off with Steven Henson and UTSA twice, taking both matchups last season in Boca Raton. Henson has been the Roadrunners' bench boss for five seasons and was the 2017-18 C-USA Coach of the Year.
Offensive rebounding has been a point of emphasis for the Owls. The message has been received. FAU averaged 13.53 offensive boards per game coming into the weekend, which ranked No. 1 in Conference USA and No. 13 in the nation. The Owls hold an edge in second-chance points in 12 of 15 games this season.
FAU is also No. 1 in C-USA and No. 9 in the nation in rebound margin (+9.6).
FAU is one of the more prolific 3-point shooting teams in the nation, in terms of shots hoisted from behind the arc, shots made from distance and long-range efficiency. The Owls were No. 1 in C-USA and No. 26 in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage coming into the weekend and are converting at a .382 clip. In 3-pointers made per game, FAU was No. 3 in C-USA and No. 21 in the nation, averaging 9.8.
Jailyn Ingram came into the weekend No. 13 in C-USA in scoring (14.5 ppg) and No. 15 in the league in rebounding (6.1 rpg). He is one of just 5 C-USA players in the Top 15 of both categories. Ingram's averages suffered after he left Game 2 of the Charlotte series with an injury.
Ingram has scored in double digits in 9 of his last 13 outings. He has six outings with 20-plus points this season. Ingram has a pair of double-doubles this season, giving him 10 for his career. He is the most prolific current Owl in the category of double-doubles.
Michael Forrest has averaged more than 18 points per game over his past four contests. He has done a good deal of his damage from behind the arc in that stretch shooting .457 from 3-point range with multiple triples in 3 of those 4 contests. For the season, Forrest's 38 3-pointers made and 104 attempted are the most on the FAU squad.
