BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team, like everyone else in the world, has witnessed change due to COVID-19. Several of those changes are reflected in the schedule, which the Owls announced on Monday.
The first adjustment comes in the form of tournaments. FAU traditionally holds as many as five or six tournaments, but this season will participate in three, with two scheduled for Boca Raton. FAU will open the 2021 season at nearby FIU where they will participate in a tournament that features the Owls, host Panthers and Winthrop. One week later, the Owls will host the annual "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament featuring FAU, Iowa State and Mississippi. FAU will then travel to USF for a three-game series before hosting the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Tournament, which will feature FAU, No. 13 Kentucky, Coastal Carolina, FIU, Illinois State and Pittsburgh.
A mix of non-conference and in-state foes will speckle the schedule for the remainder of the season which will be highlighted by another change, four-game Conference USA weekends. One year ago, softball experimented with thee games in three days. This season, softball has adopted four games in three days with a doubleheader sandwiched between single-game days.
The 2021 Conference USA Championship will be hosted by WKU and is scheduled for May 12-15.
"We are excited to get started and keeping our fingers crossed for the 2021 season," said Joyce. "We have a very, very aggressive schedule that has seen a lot of changes through the last month due to the pandemic. We will face teams from eight different conferences and a few ranked in the nation's top-25. As far as changes to a four-game league schedule, we will not face teams from the C-USA West, but I think the East has historically been the more difficult side. Does it matter? No. Competition is competition and if that what we need to do to play, that is what we will do."
