BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team's schedule for 2021 has been announced, on Monday by head coach John McCormack.
The first game of the '21 campaign will be on the road, in a split series against UCF. The Owls and Knights will play on Friday night, Feb. 19, in Orlando, before returning to FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton for the final two games of the three-game set.
"We're really looking forward to getting back on the field and playing," said McCormack. "It's similar type of schedule in terms of RPI, we're in good shape there. I think it's a really competitive schedule, and we're going to have to be ready to go on February 19th."
Non-conference play will fill up the first five weeks of the schedule, including full home weekend series against Seton Hall (Feb. 26-28) and Indiana State (March 11-13), facing the Sycamores for the first time in program history. The rest of the pre-Conference USA slate will be versus in-state foes, whether it be midweek or weekend. After UCF, matchups will scheduled to be played against Florida Gulf Coast, Florida, Miami and USF.
C-USA play starts at home March 26-28 versus Marshall, the first of four league sets in Boca Raton. Four series will also take place on the road. The eight conference series matchups are against predominantly Eastern Division foes, including home-and-home with each program's nearest travel partner (in FAU's case, FIU). Every C-USA weekend set will consist of four games, with Friday night and Sunday afternoon matchups sandwiched around a Saturday doubleheader, with each Saturday contest lasting seven innings apiece.
"The conference schedule is going to be a little different," said McCormack. "We're going to be in divisions this year, which is the first time ever for us as long as we've been in Conference USA. We're going to play FIU two series, play Old Dominion, Marshall and Charlotte, and then cross over and play Southern Miss and UAB on the other side. So we're going to miss some teams in the league (six in total). And we're playing four-game series. That in itself is a little different, going from three games to four games, and doubleheaders are always interesting. It's a sign of the times, and we're going to have to make it work."
The final regular season series sees the Owls host Southern Miss from May 14-16. The last midweek matchup (and only one in the midst of conference play) is at Miami on May 18, preceding the 2021 Conference USA Championship, scheduled to start a week later in Ruston, Louisiana, on May 25.
"The schedule will certainly be a lot different than it has in the past," said McCormack. "We're going to play Central Florida on the weekend, which we haven't done in probably 15 years, and South Florida on a weekend, which I don't think we've ever done. The way we're scheduling games, to stay out of hotels, is going to be unique. Fans are going to have to really pay attention to the schedule to make sure they get to the games (with the split series), but it's going to be nice to just to be back playing."
