BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball season begins Wednesday night as the Owls will take on New Mexico for the first time in program history, and will do so at The Pit in Albuquerque beginning at 9 p.m. Eastern.
Owls' 2020-21 and Exhibition in Review
Head coach
Dusty May's fourth season opener sees him welcome back three players that started at least half of the team's games last year (
Bryan Greenlee – all 23,
Michael Forrest – 17 and
Everett Winchester – 14), while needing to replace three that did that same thing (
Karlis Silins – all 23,
Kenan Blackshear – 21 and
Jailyn Ingram – 15).
The Owls' lone public exhibition was Monday, Nov. 1, defeating Lynn, 69-54. Forrest led FAU in scoring with 13, followed by
Giancarlo Rosado's 12. Fellow second-year
Alijah Martin had 10 points and nine rebounds as FAU led for all but 2:09 of the contest to take the home win.
Owls' Opponent in Preview
New Mexico was 6-16 last season and has turned over the reigns to former FIU and Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino. Only seven returners are back, and of those, the leading scorer was Saquan Singleton (8.0 ppg), but he is out indefinitely due to injury. The Lobos are attempting to reload with nine newcomers, including DI transfers Jamal Mashburn, Jr. (Minnesota), Jaelen House (Arizona State), Gethro Muscadin (Kansas) and Taryn Todd (TCU).
Opponent History
This will be the first time the squads have met in the Owls' 33-year history, while the Lobos' first game took place in the 1899-1900 season (and every year since 1921-22).
After This
The Owls' first home game sees the team host Warner on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. on Abessinio Court inside FAU Arena. Single-game and season tickets are on sale now. For single-game, see
