Season and Collegiate Careers Began at Bedford

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team, who climbed to the program's highest rank in 2021, opened play for the 2021-22 season this past weekend at the Bedford Cup, which was hosted by USF.
The Owls traveled to the center part of the state with four freshmen seeking their first collegiate experience. Two veteran players, Martina Kudelova and Katerina Filip, guided the young squad through the tournament and two action-packed days. The end result: the squad now knows the level of tennis they are expected to play, and they have a detailed playbook for things that need to be improved upon.
On last weekend's play at the Bedford Cup:
"The Bedford Cup was the first tournament of the season and the first college athletic experience for four of our freshmen. I think a few of them didn't expect the consistent high level of tennis and were humbled. The first day was jam-packed with two singles and two doubles matches. The matches were played in over 100-degree temperatures. So it really tested our fitness, which I thought the team did great job in that area of their tennis. Veteran [Martina] Kudelova did a great job representing FAU with WTA-level matches. Freshman Greta Schieroni suffered with a shoulder injury, so I told her to underhand serve. She won two matches while underhand serving. She showed coachability, resilience and was a great example of overcoming adversity and being able to find a way to get the win. I was not satisfied with our doubles results. I will be expecting more of them in practice. We have a lot of work to do over the next few months, but overall it was a good first start to our fall tournament season."
