BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University student-athletes have earned an Academic Progress Rate above the national average and 10 points higher than the average score posted by Conference USA members.
FAU saw 14 of its 19 varsity teams earn a perfect eligibility score, including eight teams posting a perfect APR score. That collective effort enabled the Owls to post a 992 APR for the 2018-19 year. FAU has shown an increase in five of the last six years with the 992 score being the highest. The national average for all Division I institutions as well as FBS universities is 984 and the C-USA average is 982. The Owls' 2018 score is a 45-point improvement from FAU's score in 2013.
While the Owls are above the national average, seven teams led Florida in their respective sport and five also led C-USA. Among the 19 FAU teams, 14 are listed fourth or better in their conference and 11 are third or better in Florida.
"Our student-athletes are to be commended for their hard work in the classroom, as well as in competition and in the community," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White. "The culture of academic success at FAU is something we're all very proud of and is a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes and the commitment of our coaches and academic staff."
APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
"Student-athletes are measured competitively by wins and losses and measured academically by APR and GPA," said Eric Coleman, FAU's senior associate athletics director for academics and student development. "To improve each year and to achieve a score much higher than the national average is a testament that the students, the coaches and the support staff are committed to academic success. Congratulations to them all."
