BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer class of newcomers joining the program for 2021 has grown to three, as Sofia Voldby, a native of Sweden, signed her NLI on Wednesday.
Â
Voldby hails from Halmstead, Sweden, and most recently played club soccer there for IS Halmias, a top-tier Division I team. This summer, she attended the national camp held by the Swedish Soccer Association, for the F18 national women's team. The 5-6 midfielder was also part of the 2019 Gothia Cup U18 gold medal-winning squad, Göteborgs DFF, a tournament that in full is made up of 1,700 teams representing 80 nations.
Â
Fans can view – and still currently vote for – one of Voldby's goals, one of the Hallandsposten newspaper's 10 candidates for "Årets mål," or goal of the year,
here (hers is No. 8). She has earned many youth and school accolades along the way, including Striker of the Year, Fighter of the Year, Training Diligence of the Year and Team Player of the Year (all for HGH), and the "Sports Winner" award for Aspero Gymnasium during the autumn 2019 semester. At school, she starred not only in soccer, but also track & field (with multiple gold medals in the latter).
Â
Why Voldby chose FAU:
"I chose FAU for several reasons," said Voldby. "The school seems to have a high ranking and a good reputation regarding academics, with many interesting school subjects to choose between. The soccer team is very highly ranked in the country, therefore I think it will be exciting to see what my qualities can bring to the team, but it is just as interesting to see how this team will develop me both as a person and as a soccer player. It is also a large school, which is why I hope to experience the 'typical' American atmosphere at, for example, the American football games that we Swedes see on film. A plus is also that it is close to the coast and has a warmer weather than Sweden. But above all, I chose FAU because I received such a warm welcome from Coach Baker. I can really see myself spending my time at FAU. My gut feeling tells me that FAU is the right decision."
Â
Baker on Voldby:
"We are excited to have Sofia join our program at Florida Atlantic University," said head coach
Patrick Baker. "She is one of the best young players in Sweden and her game projects perfectly into our system/style. Sofia possesses athleticism, speed, skill, soccer IQ and passing range, and makes those around her better. She has a tremendous engine, covers a lot of ground centrally and will make an immediate impact. We have enjoyed her recruiting process and now look forward to Sofia's academic and soccer career here in Boca Raton."

Voldby joins two other freshmen thus far that have signed for the 2021 class, Jodi Smith (
