BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team signed five promising student-athletes on Wednesday: Julie Honzovikcova, Marketa Svozilova, Kate McLaughlin, Kelsie Roberts and Sydney Schroder. They will join Coach Capri Grotowski's squad ahead of the 2022 season.
"I can't tell you how excited we are for the incoming 2021 class," Grotowski said. "Smart, athletic and amazing ladies from a lot of different places. We can't wait for them to come to Paradise and join the FAU Sandy Owl family!"
Julie Honzovikcova, a Prague, Czech Republic native, comes to FAU with a decorated amateur résumé. Since 2016, she finished first once, second twice, third three times and fourth once at the Czech Championships (volleyball and beach volleyball combined). Honzovikcova's sister, Natalie, plays beach volleyball at Grand Canyon University.
Another Czech Republic recruit is joining the Owls: Marketa Svozilova. Svozilova is a blocker from the city of Brno. She plans to major in psychology at FAU. Â
Kate McLaughlin is remaining in-state to attend FAU. A New Smyrna Beach High School alum, McLaughlin is the 2021 class' 10th-ranked player and a 2020 SSOVA State Champion. In 2018, she led the Barracudas' volleyball team to regional and district championships in addition to a third-place state championship finish. Â
Fellow Floridian Kelsie Roberts is also headed to FAU. Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Roberts finished her high school career at Lakewood Ranch High School. She hopes to major in neuroscience and behavior.
The Owls' final addition is blocker Sydney Schroder. Schroder comes to FAU from the state of Kentucky and played under Molly McDermott at Notre Dame Academy. She is a former Kentucky High School Athletic Association Academic All-State honoree.
FAU closed the shortened 2020 season with No. 10 and No. 12 rankings from the Dig Magazine and AVCA polls, respectively. Both were program bests. The team hopes to climb even higher with the help of its talented group of incoming freshmen.
