BOCA RATON, Fla. – A fourth member has been added to the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer incoming 2020 class, as 5-8 freshman goalkeeper Amit Cohen will join the
previously-announced trio of Gabi Cimino, Madeline Crowe and Katie Houston.
Cohen came up through the Israeli Women's National Team Academy and has a great deal of international playing experience, both for club and country. She earned six caps on the U19 Israel National Team, and recently started two matches in goal for Israel in the 2019 UEFA Women's Championship, against Italy and Denmark.
The incoming freshman's club team, ASA Tel Aviv, took home two championships in 2018-19, winning both the Ligat Nashim title – the Israeli women's championship – for the eighth time in club history (the squad posted a 17-1-6 record and earned qualification for the Champions League), as well as the Israeli Women's Cup, with a 3-1 victory in the finals match over Maccabi Kishronot Hadera coming with Cohen in goal.
Why Cohen chose FAU:
"I chose FAU because of the beautiful campus and the perfect weather in Florida," said Cohen. "The women's soccer team is very good and very successful, with a lot of aspirations for the future."
Baker on Cohen:
"We have enjoyed quality goalkeeping since our arrival at FAU and Amit will add to that legacy," said head coach
Patrick Baker. "Amit has tremendous experiences with her Israel club team playing in Champions League and representing the Israel Women's National Team. Each position within the program is being addressed through recruiting and we are excited about Amit's addition to our 2020 recruiting class. Her joining us for the spring semester will give her a great jump academically and athletically being with the team over the next few months."
Fertenbaugh on Cohen:
"I'm excited to add Amit to our goalkeeper group," said assistant and goalkeeping coach
Cameron Fertenbaugh. "She brings in a good energy and seems eager to get into training. In talking with her, she sounds very committed to improving her game through any and all means possible. I have no doubt she'll push herself and this group. Amit comes with a variety of experiences from professional soccer in Israel to national team experience, so now we are excited to see how she does with the college style of play."
The women's soccer team will return to campus this spring with Cohen joining a group that could have potentially up to 20 returnees from last year's Conference USA-title winning squad (the second in a row for the program).
