BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the first official day of practice set for a week from Friday, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team has voted three upperclassmen as captains for the upcoming 2020 campaign: pitchers
Dylan Carter and
Dylan O'Connell, and infielder/outfielder
Andru Summerall.
Â
"As we know, the captains are chosen by the team, and I thought the players picked three really good leaders," said head coach
John McCormack. "All three are experienced, all three have been through it, and they all understand what it's supposed to look like to be a captain. And each of them in their own right has a really good way of conveying our message to the rest of the team."
Â
For O'Connell and Summerall, 2020 marks the fourth season within the program for each, with each embarking on their redshirt junior campaign on the field. Carter, a senior, joined the Owls prior to last season. Summerall began his career at first base, started the majority of 2019 in leftfield (a position he had never played before), and is expected to return to 1B this season. Carter and O'Connell are both valuable members of the FAU bullpen, totaling 47 appearances and over 65 innings pitched a year ago.
Â
Here is what each new captain had to say about the appointment:
Â
Carter:
"It's an honor to be given the responsibilities of a captain. My teammates are my brothers, so it's truly an honor, and it brings me pride knowing that my teammates trust me and view me as a leader."
Â
O'Connell:
"Being voted captain makes me feel respected. I'm grateful to be put into this position and to be able to positively influence my teammates. I'll be sure we're on track to have a great year. 'Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.'"
Â
Summerall:
"Being chosen as captain is something that is very important to me. Over the years, I have become more and more of a leader from all of the experiences I have had during the duration of my time in college baseball. It is an awesome feeling to know that the guys on the team view me as someone they can look up to, as well as talk to in their time of need."
Â
The trio will lead a squad made up of 20 returnees and 16 newcomers, with the first day of team practice officially taking place on Friday, Jan. 24.
Opening Night is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14. First pitch comes at 6:30 p.m. as the Owls host Delaware at FAU Baseball Stadium to begin the 40th season of FAU Baseball. To purchase tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visitÂ
