Season Draws Closer as FAU Owls’ Football Wears Full Pads for the First Time in 2019 Camp

The Florida Atlantic University football team wore full pads for the first time this fall camp, on Tuesday. When the Owls coupled full pads with a shortened Monday practice, due to weather, a more spirited, vocal and up-tempo practice is the result.
Practice also ended with the team huddle and a congratulations for redshirt senior wide receiver Dante Cousart, who officially graduated Tuesday morning. Cousart will return for one more season of play as a graduate student. He lived up to his hardworking reputation by electing to attend practice in near-90 degree heat rather than attending his graduation ceremony.
When redshirt sophomore quarterback Chris Robison was asked about Cousart's progress after the receiver suffered a season-ending broken leg in 2018, Robison quickly described a Tuesday morning play that where Cousart made a diving catch for a first down: "It shows he knows what he is doing. He knows the plays and he will catch the ball whenever it is thrown to him."

Head Coach Lane Kiffin
"It has been a few days since talking to you, nothing major," said Kiffin. "The guys have been pretty competitive. There is a lot of competition out there. We don't have a ton of returning starters. I feel like the defense is a head of the offense. I said the same thing last year. I feel like there are some guys over there (defense) that have been significant players for us returning. Yesterday was a little complicated with the weather, so we really didn't do as much work as we would like. It is what it is. We got our legs back for today."
Player's Take
Chris Robison On Running Back James Charles
"James knows his stuff in and out. Anything that we run, whether that's run plays, pass plays, if he is hot from a blitz, he knows what he has to do. That gives the quarterbacks confidence in him and his game."
On Wide Receiver John Mitchell
"We trust him. All the quarterbacks, including myself, we trust him. We know he is going to run the right route. If we give him the chance with the ball, he is more than likely going to come down with it."
Practice Notables
Individual work continued in the trenches and with the defensive backs defending the receivers
Quarterback Chris Robison had the most explosive play of the day with a fake handoff, followed by a 60-yard run. Robison credited the tight ends for making a hole that opened green space for him to travel and score
Redshirt senior Ladante Harris, who moved from wide receiver to defensive back over the weekend, recorded an interception after Robison was forced to scramble. The pick was cause for Coach Kiffin to throw his hands up in victory celebration
Kicking and field goal attempts were added to the special team's work at the end of the practice with each kicker earning an attempt.
