BOCA RATON, Fla. – After splitting their first two results at home to lift the lid on the 2019 campaign, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team goes on the road for the next two contests. On Thursday, it's a short trip south to play Miami, and then the team takes to the skies, traveling to play No. 18 Kansas in a Sunday afternoon affair.
Both matches, provided fans have a valid cable or satellite login, can be viewed online via a live stream: Thursday on ACC Network Extra, and Sunday on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Additionally, the match against KU will have free radio available at this link.
Owls' Week in Review
The Owls (1-1-0) saw their opener end in tough fashion when a golden goal by Florida in the first overtime gave the Gators a 3-2 decision. However, FAU rebounded in a big way Sunday with a 7-1 win over Grand Canyon. The last time the program scored that many goals in a match was 17 years ago (Oct. 13, 2002 against Mercer), and it marked the second-most tallies in the Coach Baker era (10 in a win over UAPB in 2013).
Individually, Miracle Porter recorded a hat trick on Sunday, the first since Claire Emslie (in that same match in 2013), but the junior forward was not the only Owl to have a successful opening weekend. A trio of her teammates – Mary O'Hara, Pernille Velta and Sammy Vitols – each had two goals, O'Hara added an assist, Carolynn Wotring had two assists, and five others chipped in with a helper as well.
Owls' Weekend in Preview
After a 6-9-3 record in 2018, Miami (2-0) opened up with two wins to start the new season, defeating Texas Rio Grande Valley (4-0) and Farleigh Dickinson (4-1). Tia Dupont, Ine Ostmo and Lauren Markwith pace the squad with two goals apiece, while each match saw the goalkeepers split time: Melissa Dagenais played the first half of both, followed by Tyler Speaks.
Kansas (2-0) also came away with an undefeated opening weekend, with two shutouts, of Nebraska (4-0) and Loyola-Chicago (6-0). Katie McClure came through with four goals, including a hat trick in the first win, and also added two assists. Sarah Peters spent the majority of time in goal and needed just two saves for the two clean sheets. The Jayhawks were 12-6-3 last year and appeared in the NCAA Tournament, defeating St. Louis before falling in the second round to North Carolina. KU does have ties to FAU, as former Owls' assistant coach Laura Jackson is in her first year on staff.
Opponent History
Unsurprisingly, the Owls and Hurricanes have a long history, spanning over 20 years. In 15 matches, UM holds a slim 9-6 edge, and have won the last two. Last season it was a 3-2 win in Boca Raton; two years prior, in Coral Gables, the 'Canes won, 1-0. Prior to the last two results, it was two straight wins by the Owls (3-1 in 2015 and 2-1 in 2014).
FAU and Kansas have never met.
