Softball Edged Out by Marshall in Saturday’s Doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (20-29, 7-16 C-USA) dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Marshall (35-18, 16-7 C-USA). In the first game, the Owls tied up the game going into the bottom of the sixth, but a solo home run by Sierra Huerta was enough to give the Thundering Herd a 4-3 victory. The Owls were held off the scoreboard in game two, falling 10-0 in six innings.
Game 1
Key Plays:
Madisyn Palmer led off the top of the first inning with a walk and stole two bases to make her way to third. Mia Olson then grounded out to second base to help Palmer score easily and push the Owls up, 1-0. The lead did not last for long, as Mya Stevenson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame. Marshall would then add another run in the bottom of the third, as Rachel Rousseau captured a single down the middle to score Rachel Pennington. Fayth Davis then crushed an RBI single in the top of the fifth to score Ashleigh Jennings and make it a 3-2 ball game. In the top of the sixth inning, Jolie Duffner tripled to right field and scored easily following an RBI single by Carolyn Rosa to tie the game, 3-3. Marshall's Heurta hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to help the Thundering Herd regain the lead, 4-3. The Owls had a chance to tie it up in the top of the seventh, but retired in order to conclude the game.

The Thundering Herd marched on the scoreboard first following Rachel Rousseau's two-run single to go up 2-0. Marshall would extend its lead, 6-0, in the bottom of the third off a two-run single by Katie Adams and a two-run home run by Hannah Giammarino. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Amarni Brown reached on an error, which scored Giammarino. The Thundering Herd were able to end the game early following a three-run home run by Stevenson.

- Palmer stole two bases in the top of the first inning, which helped her become second in Conference USA history in career stolen bases. She surpassed Morgan Zerkle of Marshall (2014-17) who stole 162 bases in her career
- Samantha Lageyre stole a base in the first inning and is a perfect 16-16 on the season
- The Owls turned their 31st double play of the season
- Davis captured her 15th multi-hit game of the season and fifth two-hit game in a row
- Jolie Duffner also delivered two hits, including her second triple of the season
- Skylar Whitty pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Olson came in relief, pitching 2.0 innings with one earned run and a strikeout

- Palmer tied her own single-season record with a stolen base in the top of the first inning. The senior has 48 steals on the season and 164 in her career. She is two bases shy of tying Elicia D'Orazio of Marshall (2015-18) for the C-USA career stolen bases record
- Kelsey Morrison struck out three Marshall batters in 2.1 innings
- Davis is on a career-high nine-game hitting streak after her 15th double of the season in the game. The junior has elevated her batting average to .396
