Box Score
BOCA RATON Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (17-21, 4-8 C-USA) took a tough break in Sunday's game against Florida International (20-19, 2-10 C-USA), dropping the series clincher, 5-2. The Owls outhit the Panthers in each of the three games over the weekend, but were unable to squeeze by with the victory.
"It was a tough game today," said head coach
Joan Joyce. "FIU came out a little more excited about the game than we did to start with. Again, we got into a little bit of trouble giving up some runs and then we started to fight back toward the end. We hit the ball really well, but it was just too late in the game to get it started. We need to come out fighting right at the beginning of the game."
Key Plays:
Brttanny Phillips got the show started for FIU with a triple to right center field. Devon Kennedy came up to bat next and delivered an RBI single to score Phillips. The Panthers would then score two more runs in the inning off an RBI single by Annmarie Cooker to go up, 3-0. FIU would extend its lead to 5-0 after Maddie Lewis came up with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and then was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh. The Owls were on the verge of being shut out on the afternoon, but avoided the outcome with
Samantha Lageyre's RBI double to score
Ashleigh Jennings and
Jolie Duffner's RBI single to score
Madisyn Palmer. The Owls had the tying run at the plate, but the Owls would end up dropping their second consecutive game, 5-2.
Notables:
- Palmer stole six bases over the weekend, as she snagged two more bags on Sunday
- Palmer matched her career-high hit total for the second time this weekend with three base hits this afternoon. She led the team this weekend, batting .583 with seven hits, four runs scored and three RBI
- Lageyre delivered two doubles in the game to make it five on the season
- Duffner got her 13th RBI of the season
- Angela Agurkis and Jennings also came up with base hits, as well
- The Owls pitching staff had a combined six strikeouts on the afternoon with four of those coming from Mia Olson, who pitched two innings in relief
