BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 19-9 Florida Atlantic University baseball team plays Miami for the third and final time during this 2019 regular season, at 6 p.m. in Coral Gables on Wednesday night.
The Owls, winners of 13 of their last 15 and coming off a 16-3 month of March, climbed into the most recent Collegiate Baseball poll at No. 30, and is now receiving votes in two other rankings, by the NCBWA and in the USA Today Coaches poll.
Owls' Weekend in Review
The Owls (19-9, 8-1 Conference USA) are all alone atop the C-USA standings after a weekend sweep of FIU (and coupled with WKU's 13-13 tie against Charlotte). As a team, FAU is hitting league-best .296 with a high of 30 home runs as well, with six regulars are above the .300 mark, led by
Francisco Urbaez at .354,
Eric Rivera at .336,
Joe Montes at .323 and
Pedro Pages at .320. In addition to his .320 average, Pages has already matched his career high in a season with 17 walks towards a .425 OBP. He continues to excel defensively, throwing out nearly half of the baserunners attempting to steal against him (11 of 24, 46 percent), adding a pickoff, and committing just three errors in 210 chances (a .986 fielding percentage).
Owls' Midweek in Preview
Miami (18-10, 5-7 ACC) took two of three this past weekend on the road at a cold and snowy Pitt. The Hurricanes are now just two games back of first place in the Coastal Division of the ACC. Scheduled Wednesday starter Slade Cecconi has picked up two of his four victories on the year against the Owls, though last time out, FAU scored six runs off him in 5 1/3 innings. Also in the two-game set so far this year, Alex Toral has three home runs and Raymond Gil two, and the pair has five RBI apiece.
Midweek Probable Starting Pitching Matchup
FAU –
Jon Jon Kostantis, Fr. RHP (2-0, 1.96) vs. UM – Slade Cecconi, Fr. RHP (4-1, 3.63)
Opponent History
The two Hurricane wins thus far this year have made it a 64-17 UM edge, but it's only an 8-5 advantage over the last four years.
