BOCA RATON, Fla, – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (5-24, 2-14 C-USA) will take on Old Dominion (20-9, 10-6 C-USA) in the first round of the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (EST). The 12th-seeded Owls and the fifth-seeded Monarchs meet for the third time this season and the second time in less than a week.
The winner of Wednesday's game will move on to face fourth-seeded Western Kentucky on Thursday.
ABOUT THE OWLS
- The Owls squeaked into the Conference USA Championship after ending the regular season in a three-way tie for third place. The Owls edged UTSA in the head-to-head series and had a higher RPI to top FIU to earn the 12-seed
- The young Owls come into Wednesday's game hampered by injuries. Head coach Jim Jabir has used 14 different starting lineup combinations, mostly out of necessity due to those injuries
- Through 29 games, Juliette Gauthier is leading the Owls in scoring with 11.2 points per game. Myka Johnson Matthews is close behind, averaging 9.4 points. Abby Voss leads on the rebounding front, pulling down 5.8 boards per game. Glenisha Harkless has 54 assists on the season to lead the team
LAST TIME OUT
- The Owls ended the regular season against the Monarchs less than a week ago with a 68-64 loss
- FAU took an early lead in the game, jumping out 9-2 before ODU called a timeout to regroup. The Owls stretched that lead to 10 with 2:31 left in the first quarter, but the Monarchs outscored FAU 6-1 to end the period down by only five
- The second quarter was close and both teams had more success on the offensive end of the court. FAU took a 39-36 lead into halftime. After trading baskets, the Monarchs tied the game with a free throw at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter and would have a 56-52 lead at the end of the frame. The Owls came back to tie the game twice in the fourth quarter but were unable to secure the win
SCOUTING OLD DOMINION
- The Monarchs are winners of their last three games, topping Marshall and
- Longwood and then beating the Owls in the regular season finale
- Old Dominion is led by three double-digit scorers. Victoria Morris is averaging 13.0
- points per game, Ajah Wayne is putting up 11.8 and Taylor Edwards is scoring 11.0
- On the glass, Wayne leads the charge pulling down 7.9 boards per game
SERIES HISTORY
- Wednesday will be the eighth meeting between FAU and Old Dominion all-time. The Monarchs hold a 7-0 record against the Owls overall, but the two teams have not met in the postseason
- In the first matchup between the two teams this season in Norfolk, the Monarchs earned a 87-53 win. Johnson Matthews led the Owls with 10 points in that contest
- ODU visited Boca Raton less than one week ago and edged the Owls in a 68-64 win. Ra'Kyra Gabriel recorded a double-double on her Senior Day with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jamaria Williams and Johnson Matthews each added 15 points
- This will be only the fifth time in FAU's history it will play the same opponent in back-to-back games. The Owls are 4-4 in such matchups
