BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (12-12) fell to Notre Dame (13-7) in a midweek matchup Tuesday night at FAU Softball Stadium. Notre Dame's five runs in the top of the third inning were tough for the Owls to rally back from, dropping this one 6-1.
Â
Quotable:
"That was really a tough one," said Head Softball Coach
Joan Joyce. "It was the third inning with a walk, a couple of errors and they started to hit [
Kelsey Morrison]. Skylar and Mia came in and did really well, so hopefully we can continue that going into this weekend and do what we need to do."
Â
Key Plays:
The Irish and Owls were fighting it out in a scoreless game until the top of the third inning following a single by Alexis Bazos, a double by Katie Marino and a two-run home run by Cait Brooks to go up 5-0. FAU answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run following an error by Notre Dame's pitcher, but in the top of the fifth inning, Brooks hammered her second home run of the day to take a 6-1 lead. The Owls loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to produce the rally they needed to keep the game alive.
Â
Notables:
- Skylar Whitty came into the circle in relief to pitch 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and no walks, while adding two strikeouts
- Mia Olson came into pitch in the top of the sixth inning to produce zeros across the board and added in a strikeout
- Madisyn Palmer, Lauren Whitt, Fayth Davis and Ashleigh Jennings each came up with hits. Davis' triple in the bottom of the second inning was the first of her career and she extended her hitting streak to six games
- Whitt extended her hitting streak to four games
