BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (5-3) is back in action after two weeks off to face Central Connecticut State (0-8). Tipoff is set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena.
FAU is 4-1 in its last five games. The Owls are looking to continue that momentum as they seek their best start since the 2015-16 season when the team was 6-3 in the first nine games.
Jim Jabir is also nearing a huge milestone in his career of achieving 500 wins. A victory on Sunday would put him four victories away from achieving the feat.
Crystal Primm has led the Owls in scoring since the first game of the season, averaging 15.5 points per game.
Juliette Gauthier and
Lotta Vehka-Aho follow, averaging 11.4 points per game, a piece. Gauthier is the team's leader in rebounding with 7.6 per game and 3-pointers with 16 made on the season. Vehka-Aho has been a solid contributor on both sides of the ball, leading the team in assists (26) and steals (18).
FAU finished as the runner-up at the annual FAU Thanksgiving Tournament two weeks ago. The Owls opened up the tournament with a 72-61 win over Loyola Maryland. In the contest, the Owls had five players reach double digit scoring numbers led by Vehka-Aho, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Primm (13 points, three assists and three steals),
Nikola Ozola (11 points and six assists),
Amber Gaston (11 points) and Gauthier (10 points and career-high 14 boards) also reached double digits.
The Owls fell to Kansas, 90-60, in the championship game despite coming within five points at halftime. Gauthier led the Owls with 18 points and five boards with Vehka-Aho following with 13. Primm also had her seventh double-digit scoring game of the season with 11 along with four rebounds. Vehka-Aho and Gauthier found their way on the All-Tournament team after solid performances all weekend long.
The Blue Devils were projected to finish 10th in the Northeast Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches. CCSU has endured a tough schedule to open up the year with five of their losses coming within a 10-point margin or less. Three players average double-digit scoring numbers, all coming from a solid lineup of juniors. Emma McCamus has played in five of the team's eight games, averaging 14.2 points per game. Ashley Berube has started in each of the team's eight games and is ranked 14th in the NEC in points per game (11.3) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.5). Ashley Forker is the third Blue Devil in double digits, averaging 10.0 points per game, as well as sitting fifth in the conference in assists per game (3.63).
Sunday's tilt will represent the first meeting between these two teams.
