BOCA RATON, Fla. – Earning the victory in a total team effort on Friday night, and giving Florida Atlantic University women's soccer the outright Conference USA regular season title, earned goalkeeper
Cassidy Wasdin her fourth Goalkeeper of the Week honor as awarded by the league on Monday.
Wasdin and the entirety of the defense in front of her limited opposing FIU to just two shots in the match in the Owls' championship-clinching victory. The redshirt freshman ranks second among all C-USA goalkeepers, allowing just 0.88 goals per match on the season, and has earned 13 of the team's 14 victories (and seven of eight in league play).
"It was a special night not only celebrating winning the regular season championship, but also the 10 seniors on this team," said Wasdin. "They have given so much to this program and their support and encouragement is a vital part of our success. This season is about them and I can't wait to start the conference tournament this week with this special group of girls."
"Another great honor for Cassidy and to receive this recognition for the fourth time this season is remarkable," said head coach
Patrick Baker. "She has done a tremendous job this fall and with her teammates, have repeated as C-USA regular season champions. We have been blessed to have two young talented goalkeepers this year and seeing them grow under Coach Fertenbaugh has been a key to our success. We have usually been pretty experienced in goal and this year we were the youngest we have ever been. Excited for Cassidy and look forward to her continued development."
"I'm happy Cass received this award for the fourth time this year," said assistant and goalkeeping coach
Cameron Fertenbaugh. "She's done well in directing the backline, playing out of the back, and making the opponents make great plays to beat her. Every week she has held herself to a high standard, looking for ways to improve and constantly trying to play perfect. I think she's handled the pressure well this year, especially with it being her first year in net and with the lofty goals of our team."
The Owls begins play in the C-USA Championship run on Wednesday against Louisiana Tech. The match is the first of four quarterfinal round matchups on the opening day of the tournament, is set for a 12:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff, and will be streamed live on
ESPN+.
