Women’s Basketball Set to Host Nova Southeastern for Exhibition Game

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will host Nova Southeastern Saturday afternoon at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena for a preseason exhibition game. Tipoff is set at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
Head coach Jim Jabir is in his third season at the helm with his 2019-20 squad being comprised of 11 newcomers and six returners. Jabir's highly touted recruiting class features seven true freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and a graduate transfer. The team is are also well-represented throughout the country and world, coming from six different countries and seven states. In the yearly preseason poll, the Owls were picked to finish 10th in Conference USA, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
FAU is coming off the 2018-19 season with a 5-25 record with a team that tied for having a nation's most eight true freshmen. The Owls' leading scorer was Juliette Gauthier, who is back for her sophomore year after averaging 11.2 points per game in her rookie season. Returners Abby Voss and Glenisha Harkless also led the team in statistical categories during their freshman seasons with Voss at the top in rebounds with 5.9 per game and Harkless having 56 assists.
Nova Southeastern went 21-12 (13-7 Sunshine Conference) in 2018-19. The Sharks, who were a No. 8 seed, made a run in the 2019 Division II Championships to the quarterfinals where they would fall to No. 1 Drury, 91-60. Jordan Tully is the Sharks' leading returning scorer, coming off her junior season having averaged 11.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Esabelle Levine is the leading returner in rebounding (5.0), while Claire McMahon led the way in blocks with 43. Head coach LeAnn Freeland is entering her ninth season with the Sharks, who were favored to win the South Region and recognized in the Division II Media Poll as the No. 10 team in the country.
The last time FAU faced Nova Southeastern in a preseason tune-up was prior to the 2005-06 season. FAU came out victorious, 64-60 and the team would go on to finish 21-12 that season.
The Owls will open up their season on the road at Iowa on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. This is the Owls' first season opener on the road since 2014.
