BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's golf team was the best team, two of the three rounds, among the 15-member field at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational. The event, hosted by No. 19-ranked West Virginia, was played at the Pat Dye Golf Club on a par-72, 7,308-yard course.
The Owls held the lead after Monday's round one, shooting a 292. Round two was started on Monday and finished on Tuesday. FAU dropped five shots off the lead in the split-day round with a 291. The final round, also played on Tuesday, FAU pulled within three of the lead with the round's lowest team score of 284. The three-round FAU team total of 867 was strong enough for a second-place finish and was three shots behind invitational winner and host WVU.
"I'm super excited about the way our boys battled this week through the rainy first day and into the championship day today," said
Ryan Jamison, FAU's head coach. "We definitely felt like we had a great opportunity to win this event and it was a great experience for us to immerse ourselves in. I'm really excited about the play of our three freshmen this week and the big rounds from returners from Patrick (Poate) and Sully (Zagerman)."
- The Owls sat atop the leaderboard following round one and were led by freshman Alex Maguire who was -2 on the par-72 course and was tied for the tournament lead. Maguire finished tied for seventh, shooting 70-74-72 for an even par 216
- Just two strokes behind him was Max Sturdza, who shot 74-74-70 for a 218 and a top-10 finish at T1
- The third freshman Owl to compete in the tournament and the third FAU golfer to finish in the tournament's top 10 was Enrique Dimayuga. Dimayuga tied at No. 10 with Sturdza with rounds of 73, 73, 72 for 218
- Patrick Poate tied for 25th with and rounded out the team score shooting 78-70-77 for a three-round total of 225, nine over
- Senior Sully Zagerman finished strong in the final round with carding a 70, and finished with a three-day total of 228

The Owls will next travel to Beallsville, Maryland and the Four Streams Golf Club where they will compete in the Georgetown Intercollegiate Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15.
