BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-3-0) will finish out their two-game road stand at South Carolina (5-6-2, 0-4) on Sunday at 7 p.m. As the conference championships are looming around the corner, the Owls are looking to travel back to South Florida with their first conference win of the season.
About the Owls
FAU forced the draw against Stetson in DeLand, Florida Wednesday night in a 0-0 game, which became their first no decision game since 2016. In the 90th minute, the Owls were hit with a red card and despite having to play down a man the rest of the game, FAU did not allow Stetson to find a shot behind the net in either overtime period. Jean Paul Rafols led the team with three shots, while Ivan Mykhailenko and Josey Alastuey each tallied a shot on goal. Adam O'Sullivan played in all 110 minutes of the match and Daniel Ragoo was credited with the blank sheet, the first of his career.
Striker Mykhailenko has been key to the Owls' offense, as he has accumulated a team-leading five goals, 13 points, 18 shots and a .278 shooting percentage. On the C-USA level, Mykhailenko is tied for third in goals and goals per game (0.50), as well as fourth in points per game (1.30). Alex Alexis is behind Mykhailenko in shots with 13. The senior is second in the conference for assists per game (0.67) and is leading the Owls with six assists.
Goalkeeping responsibilities continue to be shared between Hagay Jalon and Ragoo. Senior Ragoo has logged in 506 minutes to tally 24 saves and a 2.14 Goals Against Average. Jalon has played in 418 minutes, accounting for 22 saves and a 2.15 Goals Against Average.
The Owls are taking more shots than their opponents in the first half, 57-48, but are being outshot in the second, 72-64. FAU has taken on one of their toughest schedules in program history with seven out of their 10 opponents having been ranked or received votes at one point in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. In the first release of the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI last Monday, FAU came in at No. 47.
About the Gamecocks
South Carolina, who comes in at No. 85 in the RPI rankings, is coming off a draw over No. 23 NC State. The team is being outshot by opponents 198-120, but is leading the conference in saves with 4.46 per game. In a competitive slate of conference play, the Gamecocks have scored one goal, while allowing nine. This is in comparison to the non-conference slate, where South Carolina has shot more goals than opponents, 13-10.
Tucker Monheimer and Brian Banahan have nine points apiece, both scoring four goals and tallying an assist, which leads the team. CJ Mitchell-Smith is behind the duo with three goals on the season. The net has been shared amongst three goalkeepers with Buenyamin Yusufoglu seeing the field the most with 11 starts and over 1,000 minutes played. The junior has posted a conference leading 51 saves along with a 1.58 Goals Against Average this season.
