The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team will open the 2019 home schedule by playing host to No. 17 University of Miami on Friday at the FAU Tennis Complex. The match, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
While all eyes will be on the court action, the sidelines will feature a bit of a reunion as well. FAU is coached Head Coach Marcy Cava, who is assisted by
Caroline Wheelen, and they are believed to be the only sister combination coaching together at the same university in any NCAA sport. The duo also played for Miami, with Cava graduating in 2002 and Wheelen in 1998. Much of the duo's collegiate knowledge and experience can be traced to Miami's Head Coach Paige Yarosuk-Tews, who served as a volunteer assistant coach during Wheelen's senior season and assumed the helm of the Canes for Cava's final campaign. While at Miami, Wheelen etched herself in the UM record books. She ranked as high as No. 30 in 1993-94 and had a team-best record of 18-7. In 1995-96, the team topped out at No. 76. Wheelen claimed her highest collegiate rank in 1996-97 at a No. 27 in singles, with the team's best record of 25-8, and a No. 19 rank in doubles.
The Owls will enter the match with a 1-1 record. FAU opened the 2019 campaign last weekend at Florida State where the Owls fell to the Seminoles, ranked No. 15. That match was the debut of four new members to the squad. The following day, FAU upended USF 4-3, in Tampa, with the game-winning match captured by senior
Kristen Thoms.
Natalia Boltinskaya, ranked No. 88, will lead the Owls. Miami, which opens its 2019 season at FAU, will be led by No. 7 Estela Perez-Somarriba, No. 82 Daniella Roldan and a No. 51-ranked doubles team of Yuna Ito and Ulyana Shirokova.
