BOCA RATON, Fla. – After helping Florida Atlantic University women's soccer to a Conference USA victory in their opener against Marshall, sophomore Sammy Vitols has been named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Vitols was directly responsible for both goals in Friday's 2-1 win over the Thundering Herd to open the C-USA ledger. Vitols scored her first goal of 2018 in the 18th minute to open the scoring, then sent in the corner kick that led to the game-winning goal in the 30th minute. The Orlando, Florida native logged a season-high 50 minutes in the victory.
"I'm thankful to receive this award, it means a lot to me that all the hard work I've put in throughout the beginning of this season as well as preseason is paying off," said Vitols. "I also want to thank my teammates and coaches for supporting me and pushing me to be the best that I can be on and off the field."
"We are pleased for Sammy to receive C-USA recognition for her efforts over the weekend," added Head Coach Patrick Baker. "She has been becoming more and more consistent in her performances since the beginning of the season, and Friday night, her play was highlighted with some timely production versus Marshall. We needed a lift on the road and she provided that in a big way."
The final match in non-conference play, and match No. 2 on the league slate (as well as the C-USA home opener) are upcoming this week for the Owls. Oral Roberts is first, Thursday at 7 p.m., and UAB is Sunday at noon in a matchup of two squads that are each 1-0 in conference play.
