BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 2018 campaign for Florida Atlantic University women's soccer commences this weekend with two matches against in-state schools, hosting Miami at FAU Stadium Friday before traveling to Gainesville to take on No. 7 Florida on Sunday night.
Owls' Week in Preview
Friday marks the third straight season in which the Owls have kicked off the year at the on-campus football stadium, as FAU and Miami will begin at 7 p.m., and a live stream and broadcast will be available at
www.FAUSports.TV. The Hurricanes were 5-11-0 a year ago and Friday will be the first match for Sarah Barnes, the team's new head coach.
Last year, the Owls hosted Florida in the opener at this venue. This year, FAU will head to Gainesville for the Gators' second home match of the weekend. It will be a 6 p.m. start, and will be broadcasted live on SEC Network +, at this link:
http://www.espn.com/watch/_/id/3422198/florida-atlantic-vs-florida-w-soccer. Florida finished last season 17-7 overall, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinal round, and was ranked No. 6 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. They are No. 7 in this year's preseason rankings.
Opponent History
The Owls did not face Miami last year, snapping four straight seasons in which the squads met (with the teams even up at 2-2 in that span). Overall, the Hurricanes hold a slim 8-6 edge in the series. In last year's season opener for both teams, UF converted on a penalty kick in overtime to edge FAU, 1-0. That extended the advantage in the all-time series for the Gators to 5-0-1.
After This
The next two matches on FAU's docket will both be at home, hosting Denver on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m., and then facing off against preseason No. 15 Baylor on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. Both will take place at FAU Soccer Stadium and tickets are available by visiting
