When Jordan Yauch made the decision to transfer to FAU after one season at the University of New Orleans, she did it with no hesitation. Boca's beaches, the Owls' coaching staff, and her long-standing friendship with fellow sophomore Sydney Riggs were enough to solidify Yauch's decision to become an Owl.
Yauch, a rightside hitter from Texas, joined the Owls last season after spending her freshman year at UNO. During her first year with the Privateers, she started in 28 matches and averaged 2.76 kills per set, which led the team.
Although she put together an impressive collegiate start, Yauch always felt there was something missing. After the season, she began exploring her transfer options.
After taking her official visit to FAU, her mind was made up. This was the place she wanted to spend her next three years.
"Everything about FAU felt like home," Yauch says.
The team's culture, which emphasized excellence and selflessness was the competitive edge that she longed for.
"Everyone wanted to win just as much as the person next to them," Yauch says.
The team's drive mirrored the same drive Yauch and her Hebron High School team had when they won the state title during her senior year. She hopes to relive that championship feeling with the Owls.
In her first FAU season, Yauch appeared in 60 sets, adding depth to the Owls' roster. Her first double-double (10 kills, 13 digs) came in the Owls second match of the season against Stephen F. Austin. She tallied a career-high 13 kills against both Stetson and Charlotte. Her 144 kills for the season was the fourth most on the team.
During this off-season, she believes traveling for spring tournaments helped the girls grow even closer as a team. They learned more about each other's game and how they could play off of each other's strengths and weaknesses. She believes the team's focus and chemistry is at an all-time high.
For Yauch and fellow outside hitter Sydney Riggs, this chemistry runs much deeper.
The two Texas natives have known each other since the age of 13, when they both played for the Lonestar Volleyball Club, a travel team stationed in Frisco, Texas. The two instantly clicked. Over the years they often talked about their dreams of playing collegiate volleyball at a Division I program.
When Yauch initially told Riggs about her plans to transfer, it was Riggs who told her "Come to FAU".
The childhood friends' reunion made Yauch's transfer a lot smoother on and off the court.
"Knowing one of my teammates like the back of my hand helped make the transition to Florida a lot easier," Yauch says.
Yauch believes their bond shows on the court as well.
"It feels natural to play together, " Yauch says. "We know each other's tendencies and we celebrate each other wins."
The two hope to share a lot more wins together this upcoming season. Yauch has set the bar extremely high for the Owls.
When asked what she's most excited about for this upcoming season, she emphatically said, "When we win the conference championship".
The Owls will have the chance to do just that when conference play begins on Sunday, Sept. 23.
