BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Three Florida Atlantic University teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for achieving Academic Progress Rates (APR) scores in the top 10 percent nationally of their respective sports during the 2016-17 academic year. Men's cross country, softball and beach volleyball were recognized for their academic excellence.
"We stress that success in the classroom is just as important as success on the field, you have to have the same work ethic in both places," softball head coach Joan Joyce said. "This award is proof that the team has taken that message to heart."
"The team does a great job in the sand, but this shows that they are student-athletes first and foremost," beach volleyball head coach Capri Grotowski said. "I'm very proud of each and every one of them."
"I am very proud of our men's team," said Alex Smolka, men's cross country head coach. "They work extremely hard in the classroom and on the roads, trails, fields and track. There is no substitute for hard work, which is a motto that fits our young men perfectly. Their dedication, work ethic and grit will lead them to successful lives long after the sunset of their careers as student-athletes at FAU."
More than 1,200 teams from 312 Division I schools were recognized by the NCAA. That number is up from last year, mostly due to an increase in perfect scores. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. It holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes, accounting for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete.
