Softball Drops Two on Day One of Parents' Weekend

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University softball opened the final 20-1 regular-season tournament hosted by the Owls, the Parents' Weekend Tournament, featuring nine teams. The opening day wasn't kind to FAU with both Ball State and Pitt downing FAU, 5-3 and 7-1, respectively.

"We need to do a better job hitting," said Joan Joyce, FAU's head coach. "We didn't adjust...they were two good teams tonight. Both their records coming in were good...We have to do a better job of not taking ourselves out of the game. That is what happens."
Game 1 Highlights
- Kaitlyn Burke, Alex Miller and Lauren Whitt were each 1-for-3
- Madisyn Palmer was 2-for-4 on the day
- Samantha Lageyre was 1-for-2 with a run scored versus Ball State
- Mia Olson rounded out the hits with a 1-for-2 plate performance
- Tatum Buckley pitched a complete game, scattered eight hits, recorded seven strike outs, but surrendered five earned runs to fall to 7-4 on the year.
Key Plays
The Owls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third and held that lead until the top of the sixth when Ball State retook the lead and then added an additional two runs in the seventh. Madisyn Palmer led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single. A Ball State error, put Palmer on third and Samantha Lagerye on second with no outs. On a pitch that alluded BSU's catcher, Palmer tried to score and was called out at the plate. Lagerye moved to third, but was left after two quick outs ended the game.
Game 2 Highlights
- Alex Miller was 2-for-3 with a run scored versus Pitt
- Emily Lochten was 2-for-3
- Samantha Lageyre had the Owls' tallied one hit in four plate appearances
- Mia Olson pitch 4.2 innings, allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Olson fell to 4-5 and gave way to Kelsey Morrison, who worked the final 2.1 innings, gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one
Key Plays
The first three innings of the game were scoreless. Pitt scored two in the fourth then led-off the fifth with a double and then drove in a run with a single. An additional four unearned runs then scored and the Owls were down 7-0. FAU scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but were held scoreless in the next two frames for the game's 7-1 final.
