BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team continues their yearly series with the University of Miami on Wednesday, traversing south for the second of three matchups against the Hurricanes in 2018.
First pitch from Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, in Coral Gables, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Owls (15-5) took the first battle, back on Feb. 28 in Boca Raton, 5-4. That night, FAU sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs, and five relievers combined to give up just three hits and a run over the final six frames for the win.
Since then, the Owls reeled off a seven-game winning streak, including 2-of-3 in their Conference USA-opening series against Old Dominion. Including the UM game, the team was batting .236. Since, they've hit .264, with 15 home runs of the 18 total notched on the season.
The Owls rank among the nation's leaders with 11 different players hitting home runs. Tyler Frank has four and Gunnar Lambert three. Frank is among three hitters batting above .300, trailing just Pedro Pages (.346) and Joe Montes (.317). Eric Rivera, reigning Co-C-USA Hitter of the Week, paces the team with 16 RBI, Pages has 15, and Montes and Diamond Johnson 12 each.
The Hurricanes (9-10) are coming off back-to-back weekend sets against ACC league foes. They won two on the home against Notre Dame, but just one on the road at Duke, this past Sunday.
Offensively, of those that qualify, Freddy Zamora is the leading hitter at .279. Michael Perez has two of the team's six total homers, and Alex Toral is the team leader at 10 RBI, one ahead of Romy Gonzalez.
FAU will give the ball to senior righthander Marc Stewart. He pitched four scoreless innings last Tuesday night in his first start of the year, versus North Florida. Overall this year, in four appearances, he has not been scored upon, with six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
Miami will counter with freshman righty Daniel Federman, who has one start in 10 games, a 1-1 record, and a 1.66 ERA. He's pitched 21 2/3 innings, with 20 strikeouts, and appeared in relief in the first matchup, throwing 1 2/3 perfect innings with two K's.
This weekend, the Owls host defending C-USA champion Southern Miss. First pitch Friday night is 6:30, on Saturday it's 4 p.m., and Sunday is a noon start. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit www.fausports.com/tickets/baseball-tickets.html.
