BOCA RATON, Fla. - Jake Miednik and two relievers combined for a two-hit shutout, and the Florida Atlantic University baseball team took win No. 1 in game No. 1, besting George Washington by a 3-0 final on Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.

Quotable

"A really nice win on Opening Day, you can't say enough about Jake (Miednik)," said Head Coach John McCormack. "He gave us exactly what we needed, and Sandy (Blake Sanderson) was really good, and of course Zach (Schneider) came in and did his job. We did enough offensively, we left a couple of runs out there, which is normal baseball. I think our guys were a little amped up, especially guys in the middle of the order. But overall, we played really good defense (and) ran the bases well and so it was a good win on Opening Night."

The Turning Point

Neither the Owls (1-0) or George Washington (0-1) had even as much as a hit until the bottom of the third inning. FAU had two on and two out, and Pedro Pages took a borderline 3-0 pitch for a called strike. On the very next offering, the sophomore catcher ripped a double into the left-centerfield gap, plating two and giving Miednik all the offense he needed on the night.

The Finish

Miednik threw six innings of no-run, one-hit baseball, and did not allow a runner past first base until GW's Isaiah Pasteur stole second in the sixth. That came in the midst of a strikeout of Matt Cosentino, and Miednik's night ended with another punchout, of Mark Osis, his seventh of the night. Blake Sanderson (two innings) and Zach Schneider (one) closed it out by facing the minimum nine batters in the final three frames.

The Bats

Pages' hit scored Diamond Johnson (who had been hit by a pitch) and Tyler Frank (who walked)
Johnson reached twice in his Owls' debut, later adding a double
Eric Rivera was also on base twice, and scored FAU's third run, on a fourth-inning play in which the Colonials committed two errors. He also stole a base
Cody Wilson walked twice and also had a stolen base, and David Miranda had a single and a walk

The Arms

Besides the one hit, Miednik walked just two GW batters, and threw an efficient 81 pitches in six innings
Sanderson gave up a leadoff double to Dominic D'Alessandro, but erased him two batters later on a double play. He struck out three in two innings of work
Schneider picked up his first FAU save with a perfect ninth inning
The three Owls' hurlers combined to throw 87 strikes in 120 pitches for a 72.5 percent success rate
