BOCA RATON, Fla. – Student-athletes at Florida Atlantic University know what it means to be #WinningInParadise both on and off the field of play. Not only have the Owls excelled in their respective sports, but they have shown they can accomplish notable achievements in the classroom as well, posting higher graduation rates than the general student body. The graduation success rate (GSR) for FAU student-athletes hit 80 percent this past year based on data compiled by the NCAA of its athletes from 2008 to 2011.
Â
GSR is a measure of the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who graduate with a bachelor's degree within six years. When data was first compiled in 1998, FAU student-athletes had a 62 percent graduation rate, which has continued to steadily increase over the years.
Â
"Our student-athletes continue to thrive in the classroom at FAU," said Eric Coleman, associate athletic director for academic excellence. "The steady increase in graduation rates, grade point average and academic performance rate illustrates the commitment to academic excellence by our student-athletes, coaches and staff."
Â
Men's swimming and diving is one of four programs in the country to record 100 percent for the GSR and federal graduation rate (FGR) with women's golf also receiving 100 percent for both rates for the first time in program history. Volleyball posted a perfect GSR for the eighth straight year, along with women's swimming and diving, who achieved 100 percent for the fourth year in a row. Women's tennis achieved this feat for the third consecutive year, and men's tennis reached the plateau for the first time in team history.
Â
Men's basketball jumped up to a 92 percent GSR, which is a 15 percent increase from the previous year, while men's cross country's 83 percent rate was 16 percent higher compared to last year. A myriad of teams saw their highest rates in recent years, which is indicative of the strides that have been made to ensure all student-athletes walk away from campus with a diploma.
Â
FAU student-athletes recorded their sixth consecutive semester with above a 3.0 in the spring of 2018 and are on track to complete 5,000 community service hours by the end of the academic year. These initiatives make for a valuable college experience, and with the accomplishments the student-athletes have been able to make over the past few years in the classroom and community, the GSR should continue to increase for years to come.
