BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team dropped a 72-68 decision on Wednesday afternoon to Hampton University. Wednesday's game was the season opener for the Owls. Students from AD Henderson University School were in attendance for the game as part of a 50-year celebration of the school.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team dropped a 72-68 decision on Wednesday afternoon to Hampton University. Wednesday's game was the season opener for the Owls. Students from AD Henderson University School were in attendance for the game as part of a 50-year celebration of the school.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
- After a Hampton 3-pointer to open the game, Myka Johnson Matthews scored the first FAU points of the 2018-19 season on a right wing jumper. The two teams traded a couple of baskets, but FAU took the lead at the 7:57 mark in the first quarter on a three-pointer from Abby Voss. FAU's lead grew to nine twice in the first quarter and the Owls ended the frame up 26-20
- Hampton outscored FAU, 30-17, through the second and third quarters to take the lead, up 50-43 at the end of the third quarter
- The Owls were able to get within three points in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer from Danneal Ford, but Hampton was able to score four straight to go back ahead and keep the lead
- Redshirt junior Johnson Matthews and freshman Juliette Gauthier led the Owls with 13 points each. Gauthier also had seven rebounds and seven assists in the game. Johnson Matthews had three rebounds and two assists
- Senior Ra'Kyra Gabriel had 12 points in the game. She also pulled down six rebounds and tied her career high in blocks with three
- Freshman Abby Voss crashed the boards for 16 rebounds along with seven points, two assists, two steals and a block. Her 16 rebounds were the most by a FAU player since Shaneese Bailey had 17 against NJIT in 2014
- Redshirt senior Danneal Ford added five points, six assists and four rebounds
- The team connected on 10 3-pointers, the most since making 10 last season against UTEP on January 18 in El Paso
- The Owls had 21 combined assists in the game, the most by a FAU team since 2016 when the Owls had 22 against Florida Memorial
- Five freshmen made their FAU debut on Wednesday
- There were 1,182 fans in attendance at the game
