BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country teams have swept the Conference USA Athlete of the Week awards, the league announced on Tuesday. Junior Mikaela Jonsson has been named the Female Athlete of the Week, while junior Lachlan Shiver was tabbed the Male Athlete of the Week.
FAU competed in the Great American Cross Country Festival last weekend in Cary, North Carolina. Jonsson was the overall winner on the women's side, besting 97 runners with a time of 18:49 and leading her team to first place. Shiver raced to a fourth place finish on the men's side, beating his personal best time set in the last 8K he competed in. His time of 25:43 was the third fastest by an FAU runner in program history. He led the men's team to a second place showing.
"I couldn't be happier for Mikaela and Lachlan," said Head Coach Alex Smolka. "It's always awesome when one's hard work, dedication, commitment and overall grit gets recognized by others! They are exemplary student-athletes in the classroom, the community and the course."
The women's team has now won three of the five events they've competed in this season and Jonsson has been the top runner for the Owls in every race she's ran. Saturday's win was the first collegiate win for the junior. Even more impressively, Jonsson is returning after sitting out the track season last spring with an injury.
Shiver has been the top runner for the men's side in every race this season. He has also set new personal records in every race this season.
Both teams will be back in action on Friday at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa hosted by USF to wrap up regular season competition. On October 27, the Owls will host the Conference USA Championship at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.
