BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University head softball coach
Joan Joyce was inducted into the Atlantic Sun Hall of Fame last Monday in Florence, Alabama.
Â
Joyce is the only softball coach in the 24-year history of the FAU softball program. In 12 seasons as members of the ASUN, Joyce led the program to nine conference titles, with eight of those occurring in consecutive years, which set a league record for titles by any sport. While in the Atlantic Sun, Joyce earned ASUN Coach of the Year six times and had 23 First-Team, 27 Second-Team and nine Third-Team All-ASUN selections. Joyce has produced four ASUN Players of the Year, two Freshmen of the Year, one Pitcher of the Year and one Hall of Famer in Nikki Myers (1999-2002). Under direction of Joyce, FAU has made nine NCAA appearances (eight in consecutive seasons).
Â
Prior to her accomplishments as head coach, the Connecticut native obtained 15 All-America honors, plus a national tournament batting title (.467). Joyce racked up a career pitching record of 753-42, which includes 150 no-hit, no-run games and 50 perfect games. She also takes credit for striking out Ted Williams and Hank Aaron.
"It was an honor to be there and to be inducted into the ASUN Hall of Fame," said Joyce. "I have received many awards and have been inducted into many Halls of Fame as a player, but it is much more rewarding when you go in as a coach."
Â
The ASUN Hall of Fame induction becomes the 16th of such honor for Joyce. She has been welcomed into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2013), Florida Sports Hall of Fame (2012), Palm Beach Sports Hall of Fame (2008), New England Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1999), International Sports Federation Hall of Fame (1999), Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame (1998), Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame (1995), National ASA Hall of Fame (1983), Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame, Women's Hall of Fame of Connecticut, Hank O'Donnell Hall of Fame, Connecticut Basketball Hall of Fame, Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and the Greater Waterbury Hall of Fame. Additionally, Joyce is one of a handful of Americans who have been enshrined into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
Â
FAU softball will commence the 2019 season on Friday, Feb. 8 when the Owls host the University of Georgia as part of the FAU First Pitch Classic.
