HOUSTON - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team was upended in their Conference USA opener on Friday night, with Rice taking a 6-2 victory at Holloway Field.
Turning Point:
Rice (4-2-1, 1-0-0 C-USA) scored the first two goals of the match, but that advantage was halved just nine seconds after the second tally, when FAU's (4-4-1, 0-1-0 C-USA) Asta Arnadottir notched her first goal of the season, in the game's 23rd minute.
The Finish:
It stayed at that 2-1 margin as the second half began, but it didn't take long for the homestanding Owls to extend their lead, three times over in rapid succession. In the span of 1:42, in the 48th, 49th and 50th minutes, the lead ballooned to 5-1. FAU got one back in the 66th, on the first goal in the career of sophomore Mimi Godoy, but Rice countered with another in the 69th for the final margin.
Notables:
- Arnadottir's goal was the seventh of her career, and the senior has now scored a goal in each of her four years with the FAU program
- It was assisted by Pernille Velta, while Godoy's came from Elisha Holmes
Quotable:
"I thought we were excited about opening C-USA play tonight, but unfortunately didn't give a true account of ourselves," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "Rice was at a whole different level than us and it showed in every facet of the the game: offensively, defensively, in transition and with set pieces. I'll make no excuses for where we are at and what we are going through; they kicked our back sides and we have to learn from this humbling experience. We have a long trip to Utah tomorrow and a short turnaround before competing against Southern Utah on Sunday. Hopefully we can compete a bit better and show some real soccer qualities."
What's Next:
The Owls will play their fourth straight match away from the Sunshine State, concluding the weekend on Sunday afternoon. The match will be at Southern Utah, in Cedar City, beginning at 3 p.m. EST.
