BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University finished the weekend with a 9-6-1 record, a Conference USA Diver of the Conference Meet and Dive Coach of the Meet honors. Along the way, two individual performances were instrumental in the overall success. Freshman diver Victoria Moretti earned FAU Female Athlete of the Week while sophomore shortstop Tyler Frank captured the Male Athlete of the Week honors.
Moretti stunned the competition at the 2017 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships last week. The Orlando native claimed victory in both the one- and three-meter dive events at the Conference USA meet. She set new FAU and FAU freshman records with scores of 317.10 and 285.75. Moretti also was the runner-up in the platform. For her efforts, she was named Diver of the Meet. She will next compete at the NCAA Zone B Meet, March 6-8, with the hope of advancing to the NCAA Championship.
On the baseball diamond, Frank went .643 at the plate, going 9-for-14, with a double, two homers and five RBI versus Indiana. For the season the middle infielder, who played catcher out of necessity a year ago, has posted gaudy numbers with a team-leading .613 batting average, three home runs and 12 RBI. His on-base percentage as the team's leadoff hitter is .636. His return to short has been seamless replacing CJ Chatham, a four-year starter, the 2016 C-USA Player of the Year and the highest draft pick in the program's history.
Moretti extended her season and baseball will continue play in their young season on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at FGCU and will play host to Miami on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. A free audio broadcast will be available for the FGCU tilt while the Miami game will be streamed live on FAUSports.TV.
