MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Florida Atlantic University football team fell behind early and were topped on the road Saturday afternoon by Kansas State, 63-7.

The Turning Point

On the game's opening possession, the Owls (1-2) took the ball from their own 8-yard line to the Kansas State 37, but were stopped and forced to punt. The Wildcats (1-1) immediately put together a 16-play, 89-yard drive, which included three third down conversions, for the game's first score at the 4:23 mark. Later in the first quarter, two short fields pushed KSU up 21-0, and they forced a turnover on the final play of the opening period to score again early in the second.

The Finish

FAU redshirt junior wide receiver Kalib Woods came up with what was likely the catch of the game, a twisting and leaping 39-yard gain on a pass he was interfered with late in the third quarter. Two snaps later, on the first play of the fourth quarter, "Buddy" Gregory Howell, Jr. got into the end zone for the third straight game to put the Owls on the board.

Notables

Woods had nearly half of the team's receptions, seven, for 82 yards
Freshman Kerrith Whyte, Jr. had a team-high 54 rushing yards, including 22 on one carry, and added 87 yards on four kickoff returns (with a long of 30). All told he had 141 all-purpose yards, the most of any player on either team
"Motor" Devin Singletary, the team's upstart freshman running back, had four catches out of the backfield and added a 33-yard kickoff return. He fell just under the century mark in all-purpose yardage with 98
Jalen Young led the Owl defenders with eight tackles while Lester Thomas added six and Richie Kittles and Rashad Smith each chipped in with five
Trey Hendrickson and Shelton Lewis each had sacks, while those two along with Azeez Al-Shaair, Shalom Ogbonda, Smith and Jerrad Ward each had a tackle-for-loss
Ocie Rose forced a fumble in the fourth quarter, which was recovered by Herb Miller
After the break, KSU only scored two offensive touchdowns and just had three scores overall. One touchdown came with exactly a minute left
The game was played before a crowd of 50,871

"Obviously disappointed in how the game went, it goes without saying," said head coach Charlie Partridge. "To give away three turnovers there in the first half put us in a bad hole going into halftime. Proud of the effort of our defense in the second half, got a few three-and-outs there in a row, so we've got some things to build on. But we certainly have a lot to fix between now and our next game against Ball State."

The Owls return home to take on Ball State next Saturday, Sept. 24, a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Cardinals moved to 2-1 on Saturday after defeating Eastern Kentucky, 41-14.
