BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's volleyball team will open their 2016 season this weekend when they host the FAU Invitational. It's the fourth year in a row that the Owls will host the event. Bethune-Cookman University, University of North Florida, Drake University and Northeastern University will make up the rest of the field.
FAU, led by Fernanda Nelson was chosen to finish fifth in the C-USA preseason poll, coming off the heels of last year's similar fifth-place finish with a 10-6 conference record. Senior outside hitter Maja Ristic was named to the Preseason All-C-USA Team after making the all-conference first team last season.
"We are expecting a lot out of Maja and she has shown a great deal of leadership on the court in practice," said Nelson.
The squad returns three starters, as sophomores Abbi Reid and Ivone Martinez are back for the 2016 season. In total, eight letterwinners return from a year ago. Nathalie Rosado, Genesis Viera and Kristi Tekavec have all seen extensive time in the starting lineup over the course of their careers and will provide veteran leadership to the team.
"Having that experience coming back will definitely help us throughout the season," said Nelson.
FAU held its Red/Blue scrimmage over the weekend, where the seven newcomers saw their first taste of collegiate action.
"We were looking (at how the newcomers) did the little things, and we liked what we saw," said Nelson.
