BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University senior infielder Melissa Martinez was named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Player of the Week, the office announced Tuesday. The Owls, who are ranked No. 22 in the latest NFCA poll and No. 24 by USA Softball, won all three games against WKU over the weekend to clinch the Conference USA regular season title. It was the Owls' fifth conference sweep of the season. Martinez is the second FAU player to earn the national honor this season. Kylee Hanson was named National Co-Pitcher of the Week earlier this year.
"Playing so well and winning the conference title in the final home series of my career was an exciting, emotional, one of a kind experience," said Martinez. "I couldn't have done it without every single one of my teammates."
Martinez had a memorable weekend, hitting extremely well in her final three home games. In Saturday's first game, she went 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBI. In the nightcap, she went 3-for-3 with another double, two more RBI and a stolen base in a 5-3 win that won FAU the conference crown. On Sunday, she had yet another two-run double in a 6-0 win. For the weekend, she hit .700 with four doubles, 10 RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base while slugging 1.100.
The Owls wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at UTSA this weekend. The first game starts at 2 p.m. eastern on Saturday, May 7. Live stats will be available at fausports.com. In-game updates will be available at twitter.com/fauowlssoftball.
