BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team swept its fifth 2016 conference opponent and clinched the regular-season Conference USA title last weekend. The team's performance was led by two players who were recognized by the C-USA office on Monday. Kylee Hanson was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week, while Melissa Martinez earned C-USA Player of the Week.
Hanson continued her All-American caliber season with two more stellar performances. On Saturday, she gave up a run on two hits and struck out six in FAU's 16-1, five-inning win over WKU. On Sunday, she threw a complete game shutout, her 13th of the season, and allowed just one hit, while striking out 12, in a 6-0 victory. The shutout put her in 3rd place for most in a single season in FAU history. For the weekend, she was 2-0, surrendering one run on just three hits and 18 strikeouts. It is the sixth time this season that she has earned C-USA weekly recognition.
Melissa Martinez had a memorable weekend, hitting extremely well in her final three home games. In Saturday's first game, she went 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBI. In the nightcap, she went 3-for-3 with another double, two more RBI and a stolen base in a 5-3 win that won FAU the conference crown. On Sunday, she had yet another two-run double in a 6-0 win. For the weekend, she hit .700 with four doubles, 10 RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base while slugging 1.100.
